LNG-Liquified Natural Gas. "To liquify natural gas, cryogenic technology is used. Cryogenic technology is a branch of physics that deals with the behavior of materials at low temperatures. Because of the use of this technology, the high-powered refrigeration and compression consumes energy of the natural gas. Often as much as 25% of the gas. This downsizes some of the cost benefits of natural gas."
LNG terminal plans proliferate in Baja California, EcoAmericas [April 2002]
The first LNG Terminal to be built in 20 years. "...[T]he North Carolina Council of State authorized the North Carolina Ports Authority to enter into an agreement with El Paso Merchant Energy Company of Houston, Texas to construct a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, storage tank facility, re-gasification plant, and pipeline on tiny Radio Island between Beaufort and Morehead City." If the USA had sufficient domestic natural gas to meet its needs, these companies wouldn't be taking such risks. [March 6, 2001]
How Trinidad Became a Big Supplier Of Liquefied Natural Gas to the U.S.
The Trinidad plant provides 40% of US LNG and 15% of New England's gas -- 30% during peak usage. To move LNG 2,200 miles from Port Fortin, Trinidad to Boston terminal (New England) by Boston-base Cabot Corp. costs $1.50/Mcf (or MMbtu) to prep for shipping so when gas went to $10/Mcf then settled to $5-6/Mcf it became economic.
"Demand for clean-burning natural gas continues to rise. More than 90% of new U.S. power-generating plants under construction are gas-fired." ...
"[Liquefied natural gas] so far makes up less than 2% of the U.S. natural-gas supply. But the Department of Energy predicts LNG imports will increase more than fivefold by 2020, to 390 billion cubic feet a year." Wall Street Journal (on-line subscription required), page 1 [2001.03.13]
